Thank you. This article has crystalized the concept for me in a way that nothing else that I have read or heard on the subject has conveyed. I'm printing this out and pinning copies to my office wall & dressing mirror! The next open house, client meeting and network function that I attend will be very different for me. And I hope for the people that I meet.

Sincerely,
Lea Lagueux

This was an excellent article. I passed it along to our managers.

The imagery was awesome as both positions required hard work . However, the results from the pipe builder must have brought real joy to him as he was able to see the fruits of his labor knowing this had the ability to help many more than the bucket carrier and his sons could ever imagine.

Never saw myself as a ditch digger but if that's what it takes to be a pipe builder - give me a shovel.

One of my summer graduate courses is called 'Organizational Change.' Our panel discussion with several administrators this morning was all about achieving change by enabling the education community to operate within their strengths. Administration is challenged every year to help their faculty and co-administrators determine areas in which they are most in need of help, and also areas of strength from which they can generate ways of helping others develop programs for teaching and learning.

So true! Working hard in the wrong areas can lead to a lot frustration and as you stated, you feel busy, but accomplish little.

Don,
Great article. I've found that most of the time people are so afraid of failure that they won't find a way to be a better "swimmer". I struggle with it each day, because the challenges never stop. You can never attain perfect leadership, because it changes every time you overcome a new challenge. I think true leadership is understanding the changing nature of our lives, and accepting that change on a daily basis.
